Banstead History Research Group and Banstead History Centre present - Banstead at Leisure

This year we present an insight into how Banstead people used their leisure time in the years before television and the internet. How did they occupy themselves in their spare time?

Up to the 16th Century monarchs and their courtiers came to Banstead to hunt. Locals, on the other hand, opted for leisure pursuits such as poaching. Local ale houses were the conventional venues for refreshment, gossip and social gatherings.

After the carnage of the First World War thoughts turned increasingly to leisure. When there was only radio to provide home entertainment, the formation of clubs and societies gave access to recreational opportunities outside the home. Some of these organisations still exist.

History brought alive by members of the Banstead History Centre and Banstead History Research Group.

There will be a display of historical material, a bookstall and a raffle.
